Hello! I hope you’re having a wonderful week so far. This was the first full week of my spring semester, and to be honest it was pretty rough and I’m really ready for the weekend. And there’s no better way to start off a weekend than a blog post 😉 (kidding, but also not). I haven’t really done a favorites post before, so I thought I’d try it out for a topic I have pretty strong feelings about: book to movie adaptations! Without further ado, here are my top five favorites:
1. Wonder by R.J. Palacio
Wonder is one of my favorite books of all time, and its movie adaptation (thank goodness) did not disappoint. The acting and cinematography are amazing, and I was really happy with the script and especially how the dual POV narration style of the book was incorporated into the movie. Most importantly, the main themes of the book, which are what I love so much about the story, were beautifully transparent.
2. The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
The Hate U Give was my favorite book of 2018, and I think the film adaptation did a wonderful job of capturing all of the key elements and important messages of the book. Although it’s centered around challenging and difficult topics, what I loved most about both the book and the film was that they were presented in a way that made those topics digestible by the intended audience–teenagers.
3. To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han
AHHHH I LOVE THIS MOVIE!! So! Much! I’ve watched it way to many times at this point (at least six, if I’m counting correctly), and it’s amazing every time. I relate so much to Lara Jean, and although it’s not the best at staying true to the book, the phenomenal cinematography and en pointe acting make up for that. My roommate and I are counting the days until P.S. I Love You comes out on Netflix so we can drop everything and watch it, no matter what we may have going on :D.
4. The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
Although I had many complaints the first time I watched them, I now appreciate how well done these films are. Obviously, they can’t include every little detail from the 300-700 page masterpieces that they’re based on (although I would have appreciated Harry’s eyes being the same color as Lily’s), but the movies were almost just as magical as the books, and that’s all we can really ask for. Also, having read books about how they were produced and visited Warner Brothers studios in England, I have so much appreciation for all the work that went into making them and awe at the dedication and detail put into their creation.
5. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (the 2005 version)
I re-watch this movie every year, and although it doesn’t always stay true to the book, it does a pretty good job creating scenes that are equally as comedic and heartbreakingly romantic as the novel’s. The acting is exceptional, and I don’t think I could have asked for a better adaptation of my favorite Victorian novel.
