Q&A with Hannah Capin:
1) Why do you think YA literature is important, and why did you decide to write it?
I’ve always loved reading and writing YA! Being a teenager is an incredibly intense experience: you’re discovering and defining yourself, you’re experiencing so many firsts, and you’re dealing with a lot of pressures. Everything feels—and often is!—so high-stakes in high school, and I love digging into that world when I’m writing. Also, teenagers get talked down to so often by adults, and so much YA can be preachy or watered down—I think teenagers deserve stories that don’t patronize them and don’t tell them what to think. Writing those stories is my goal.
2) What advice do you have for aspiring writers?
Tune out the noise. Don’t worry about what’s happening on “book twitter” or what’s “trendy” in your genre. To become a better writer, WRITE—the stories you care about and the things that are hard to write. Don’t let setbacks daunt you: there will always be setbacks, and the way through them is to keep writing.
3) What do you hope readers take away from Foul is Fair?
That’s up to the reader!
